For a fashion blogger just starting out I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to London Fashion Week 2017 by the beautiful Chanel Joan Elkayam, a Manchester born fashion designer who is taking the industry by storm. I was also lucky enough to have a quick chat to her about her new collection and the inspiration behind it.
Showcasing her Autumn/Winter clothing collection named “La Sola Rosa” the London University student put on a flawless show which she explained was inspired by the story of British writer and poet Vera Brittain and her experiences of love and heartbreaking loss during the time of World War I.
The different looks unfolded a saddening narrative, a story of how her fiancé Roland gave her a single rose at the train station the last day they saw each other. Each look helped to portray each stage of the love story, whilst each model held a single rose.
I’m quite inspired from the past rather than now , so I bring the past into my designs and then I try to make it more modern and up to date. To me every outfit you put on is a character which I showed throughout my show.
Chanel aimed to illustrate raw beauty, emotion, power and romantic sensuality with a sense of subtle intimacy which she incredibly portrayed in every garment in her collection. Each look was feminine and had an elegant feel to it.
“La Sola Rosa” will be released along with the award winning designers first collection of belts and bags named “Saftah Gamliah” inspired by Chanel’s grand-mother.
The womenswear collection designed by Chanel Joan Elkayam combines both sophistication and glamour. The simple and timeless look of her collection appeals to all tastes with its slender silhouettes, alluring cuts and sensual fabrics. The collections are embroiled and hand embellished with Swarovski crystals and glass beads. Even the smallest detail is important to Chanel as she likes to complete a perfect and complimentary garment.
I find Dolce and Gabanna really inspirational and one day I would really like to work for Dior.
At the age of 16 Chanel launched her first ever fashion collection which was showcased in a show that she’d organised herself. Her early interest in fashion unearthed her natural talent for refined technique and inventive cuts. This has contributed to her signature wearable-coutures esthetic. Her attention to detail fuels her pursuit for perfection in every piece.
As one of the most successful designers at the age of 19, Chanel showcased her FW16 collection at Paris Fashion Week when she was 18 years old, as well as showcasing her SS17 collection at New York Fashion Week a year later. Remarkably making Chanel the youngest designer to showcase at both shows.
When asked where she would like her brand to be in the future she excitedly answered:
I hope to be dressing the most iconic women one day and to hopefully be selling my collections in department stores across the world.
With her designs now being published globally across the UK, EU, USA, Scandinavia, China and India, it is evident that this is just the beginning for Chanel and that she will have a bright future in the fashion industry for years to come.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to see the collection in all of it’s beauty and I can honestly say it was one of the most inspiring experiences, one which I will always remember.
